About Footy-501

Footy-501 is a darts game played with AFL statistics. Footy, here, means Australian rules football.

You start on 501. Naming a player is your dart, and their real stat for that category — games, goals, Brownlow votes and more — comes off your score. Land between 0 and −10 and you’ve checked out. Go too far and you’ve busted: the dart’s gone, your score stays put.

The catch is that the number stays hidden until you commit. You’re not looking it up. You’re backing yourself.

Why darts

Darts already runs on subtraction and a target you can overshoot. Australian football already has a century of numbers attached to everyone who’s ever run out. Put the two together and “name a big Richmond games player” stops being a trivia question and turns into a decision — how much can you afford to take off right now?

The numbers are real

Footy-501 uses real AFL statistics compiled from publicly available historical records, from 1990 onward — home-and-away matches and finals, men’s competition. Nothing is estimated or invented. A few categories start later than 1990, because the statistic does.

Two ways to play

The Daily is one category a day, the same for everyone, one attempt. A match is private and live — create a room, send the code to a mate, and take turns until someone checks out.

Sports-501

Footy-501 is the first game on Sports-501, the platform it runs on. The 501 format isn’t specific to Australian football; it works for any sport with a deep enough record. So the platform is named for the format, and each game is named for its sport.
